Cry, the Beloved Country-Author Notes
AUTHOR NOTES—ALAN PATON
1. Born January 11,1903 to a Scottish father and a South African mother of English Heritage. Born in Natal, South Africa.
2. He studied at the University of Natal and then worked as a teacher at the Ixopo High School for white students and then at a high school in pietermaritzburg.
3. In 1935, he was appointed as principal of the Diepkloof Reformatory of African Juvenile Delinquents where he was introduced to controversial progressive reforms. It was at this time at he wrote CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY.
4. He later became involved in politics and was the founder and president of the Liberal Party. This party opposed apartheid and offered a non-racial alternative to government policy. This party was banned in 1968.
5. Paton died on April 12, 1988 in his home near Durban, Natal.
